Assessment should answer a real question. Before we test anyone we agree what the question is, and the report is written so that the people who have to act on it — a parent, a teacher, a GP, a court — can actually use it.
Evidence first, but not evidence only. Every psychologist here practises from a recognised evidence base. We also accept that a manualised treatment developed in a Melbourne university clinic sometimes needs adapting for a family in Palmerston, and we adapt it openly rather than pretending otherwise.
You decide how far to take it. We will tell you what we think would help and how long it might take. How much of that you take up is your decision, and a decision to stop is not a failure.
The Territory is not a smaller version of somewhere else. Distance, heat, transience, a highly mobile workforce, remote communities, and a population where a great many people are a long way from family — these shape how distress shows up here. Our clinicians work here and live here.
People come to us at very different points, but the things they tell us have changed tend to be consistent:
All of our psychologists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and our psychologists are members of the Australian Psychological Society. Our provisional psychologists and registrars work under board-approved supervision, and all clinical work is discussed at a fortnightly clinical meeting.
We are a supervised training site, which means we take responsibility for growing the Territory's next generation of psychologists rather than waiting for them to arrive from elsewhere.
Our purpose is to provide psychological services that improve mental health and quality of life, and to make comprehensive assessment and treatment available to people living in the Territory — without them having to fly south for it.
Not sure whether we are the right service, or which clinician would suit? Reception will talk it through with you before you book anything.
You do not need a referral to see us. Call reception on 08 8932 8460 and we will talk through what you are looking for and who would be the right fit. If a Medicare rebate would help, we will explain how to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.
Clinical psychologists, generalists, registrars and a counsellor — with a deliberate mix of training so that case discussion is worth having.
